Yadgiri, often referred to as the “Daal Bowl of Karnataka”, is one of the newer districts in the state, officially carved out from Kalaburagi (Gulbarga) district in 2009. It is located in the northeastern part of Karnataka and is bordered by Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Vijayapura districts. Though smaller in size, Yadgiri is rich in history, agriculture, and natural beauty.
The region has a legacy that dates back to the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Yadavas, and Bahmani Sultans, all of whom have left their mark on the region through forts, temples, and other structures. The name "Yadgiri" is derived from "Yadavagiri," referring to the Yadava dynasty that once ruled the region.
Today, Yadgiri is known for its vast agricultural fields, ancient forts, and tranquil river landscapes. The district is emerging as an important centre for pulses cultivation, especially toor dal (pigeon pea) , earning its nickname.
